The job title IT consultant can be confusing as many people who have this job title will perform different roles depending on the company that they work for

The primary role of an IT consultant is to assist their client to improve their business' performance with the regards to IT. An IT consultant will often be called upon when a business needs to improve its efficiency and functionality.

This will often involve meeting clients in a face to face situation, so therefore planning is a must. An It consultant needs to be aware of the clients business and current set up. To do this well, an IT consultant is likely to need to liaise with members of their team, of course traveling is needed to attend clients premises.

There is an element of sales in a consultancy role, as you will need to be able to define the network,software or hardware requirements of the client and then try to sell a service that will match the needs. This information will also need to be presented in a formal written report.

An IT consultant can also be required to carry out training for the newly installed hardware or software, but many companies now assign this task to a different member of the team.
