IT Technical Support Officer
The role of a IT Technical support officer is primarily to monitor and maintain the computer equipment and network infrastructure of it's organisation.
These days, just about every organisation relies heavily on its Information Technology infrastructure. With the constant use and strain on the systems, problems are likely to arise such as system failure. In today's environment businesses can't afford to be without their entire network and often even without an individual workstation for more than the minimum amount of time required to resolve an issue or if needed replace faulty hardware.
Day to day duties include the installation and configuration of computer systems, as well as diagnosing any faults found with computer hardware or software. This is usually done initially over the telephone and then followed up with a face-to-face meeting with the worker who has reported the issue.
There is a lot of initiative required in a role like this one, as the issues could range from a simple tasks that only requires a new folder to fixing a major fault which has taken down the entire network! Tasks need to be managed throughout all stages until they have been resolved, often within agreed time scales, so your workload must always be prioritised.
Depending on which organisation you work for, you may be required to visit external locations, this will require you to build good working relationships with people you are unfamiliar with.
There is also likely to be a strong element of documentation with a role like this one, flow charts and processes are often required to be both followed and amended.
